BTCL will launch IP TV soon

Once identified as the weakest company, BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited) had to incur huge losses every year. But their good day has come with the effort of dynamic leadership. Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar also said that BTCL, a state-owned company that has undertaken a number of amazing services and income-generating projects, those are now profitable.

At the beginning of this year, the company’s managing director Md. Rafiqul Matin told about to bring new services. He told with us yesterday that the company has already added eight lakh customers through that service. Apart from this, Minister Mustafa Jabbar hoped that the service would generate Tk 20 crore a year. “This service will increase the revenue of BTCL, BTCL has decided to launch IP TV soon, he said.”

The managing director of BTCL yesterday told lastnewsbd.com, “New services of us are coming. We will also do on an average of eight WiFi projects in the Haor-Baor unions, which are currently underway. He said the project of more than 300 haor-baor areas would also go to tender in next one to two weeks. Dr. Rafiqul Matin said, “We have also started GPON service in different places even outside Dhaka. Specifically we have started GPON service in Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Barisal, Patuakhali, Faridpur, Pabna, Rangpur and Dinajpur. By doing that BTCL’s customer service is constantly increasing, he says. Apart from this, several income-generating projects are playing an important role in restoring the good fortune of the company. These include providing free telephone connection, monthly bill (rent) package offer, high-speed internet service, creation of internet-based infrastructure in the economic zone, tower sharing and launching OTT (Over the Top) app etc.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of ‘Mujib Year’, BTCL provides free connectivity to its customers. By doing this the demand has started to increase as free connection of landline has started from October 2019. Since from last December, the number has increased more than 32,000. Phone bills have also been reduced. Unlimited calls are now being made to BTCL to BTCL for 150 BDT throughout the month. Land phones are available without demand notes. Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said that these are surprising to many. Not only that, BTCL will also provide high quality telecommunication facilities (voice calls, internet, data, etc.) through fiber optic cable in five new economic zones of the country (Shrihat in Moulvibazar, Sabrang and Naf in Teknaf, Sonadia in Jamalpur and Maheshkhali).

High speed uninterrupted telecommunication facilities will also be ensured in these five economic zones. These will be 5G enabled networks. A telecom building will also be constructed in each economic zone. BTCL has providing internet services through Gigabyte Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology and Modernization of Telecommunication Network (MOTN). These two technologies are now set to give 100 to 150 connection of a day. According to BTCL sources, customers are more interested in these services due to the high speed of internet. It is known that BTCL has more than 5500 towers all over the country. BTCL will be able to share these towers with various telecom companies. This is one of the company’s income generating project. The company has already received the permit. However, BTCL will not be able to build any new towers. The capabilities of the existing towers can be shared with different organizations. The towers are also used by different government agencies for different types of transmissions. In the future, Teletalk will be able to use these towers on a priority basis.

Meanwhile, BTCL has also reduced the number of inactive customers. Rafiqul Matin, managing director of BTCL, said that even though the expenses were deducted from the revenue earned by shutting down the inactive numbers, the money is still pending. But the problem is the cost of depreciation. The amount is 450 crore BDT per year. BTCL will going to appoint two auditing institutes soon to understand the actual amount. He hopes that the company will be able to show two real scenario and the depreciation will be reduced. He said, “BTCL’s broadband internet speed is very high and customers are also highly interested.”

That is why the sector is doing well now. ‘It is learned that the demand for BTCL land phones has been declining since 2011. After 2016, the number of subscribers was fluctuating between 4.5 lakh to 5 lakh. It started to increase again from 2016 which is currently 4.9 lakh. BTCL says that in December 2020, the landline was 595,046. In 2011, there were about 1 million customers across the country. Despite losing about 510,000 customers in 10 years, BTCL has started returning customers again due to new innovative services.
