Yaba smuggling goes unimpeded

Lastnewsbd, 12th September, Dhaka: Myanmar’s security forces allegedly continue helping a section of Rohingya people run the illegal drug business in Bangladesh, detective sources said. Nearly 250 listed drug dealers were killed in gunfights with law enforcers during the drives that began across the country on May 9. Besides, nearly 30,000 people were arrested for their suspected involvement in drug dealing. In the latest development, border guards seized 9 lakh Yaba tablets from Ariakhal and Sabrang Hariakhali areas under Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Saturday. As part of the anti-drug operations, law enforcers, including police and RAB members, are carrying out the drives. Drug smugglers having links with a section of policemen and a few ruling party leaders still remained untouched. Only field-level Yaba peddlers are being caught by law enforcers, but their godfathers hobnobbing with some ruling party leaders and policemen allegedly remain behind the scene, the sources said. RAB Director (media) Wing Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said a number of drug traders are regularly arrested with drugs in different parts of the country.

Yaba smuggling into Bangladesh from Myanmar is going unchecked though a massive crackdown is continuing to check the thriving trade of the contraband narcotic. Sources said many consignments of Yaba are taken into Bangladesh through the borders, evading eyes of border guards and other law enforcers. They are awarded different terms of imprisonment on charges of dealing in drugs. They again get involved in drug business after coming out of jail on bail, he added. In such a situation, the Directorate of Narcotic Control (DNC) proposed a proposal for set up separate courts in 64 districts to dispose of drug cases on an urgent basis, but due to different cases, it was not passed yet. Many men, women are also highly getting involved in drug business and addicted to Yaba, putting their lives at high risks. According to the DNC, around 98,000 people were arrested in different drug-related cases in the last nine years. During his Myanmar visit in October last year, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal urged Myanmar’s State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi to take initiatives to stop Yaba production.  Suu Kyi retorted that the ingredients of producing Yaba were available in Bangladesh, said an official at the ministry. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said they have been conducting drives, targeting listed drug spots in different places and rounded up those found in possession of narcotics. “Drug peddlers have no place in Dhaka city,” he said, adding that by turn, all drug spots in the capital will be demolished. “We have drawn up a list of drug dealers based on intelligence agencies’ information. They will be brought to book,” he said, adding that drug dealers have to pay for their misdeeds.
