Jabal-e-Noor buses putting mask

Lastnewsbd, 18th August, Dhaka: A large number of buses which were operating under Jabal-e Noor Company remained parked on both sides of the road. A number of painters and other workers were seen busy changing colours of the parked vehicles. One of the painters said requesting anonymity: “It is not possible to run these buses on the street with its previous name [Jabal-e Noor]. So, the owners have engaged us to change colours and name of the buses.” Law enforcers say they will take stern action if the Jabal-e Noor bus owners play any trick to flout the embargo authorities have slapped on them. According to them, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized six buses of the transport company on Saturday for running on city streets even after cancelation of its route permit. A mad race between two buses of Jabal-e Noor for passengers led to the fatal accident killing Abdul Karim Rajib and Dia Khanom Mim of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College on Airport road in the capital. Soon after the accident, angry students of the college went on the rampage and vandalised and torched two of the company’s buses. The accidents also sparked student movement across the country demanding safe roads. Later, the student movement and undeclared bus strike by the transport workers caused untold public sufferings in the capital and elsewhere in the country. On August 1, BRTA cancelled the registration and fitness certificates of the two Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan. Dia’s father Jahangir Alam filed a murder case against Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan for causing her death through reckless driving.

After the regulators cancelled the route permit for buses under Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan, their owners are now trying to keep the vehicles on the city street by giving them a new name. They have engaged a number of painters to change colours of the vehicles and inscribe the name – Paristan – a bus service operating on Mirpur-Abdullahpur route. The death of two students in a road crash involving two buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan on July 29 triggered countrywide student protest, promoting Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to cancel route permit for Jabal-e Noor buses. Masum Billa, a driver of ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’, gave a confessional statement before a court in connection with the deaths of the two students. Masum confessed under section 164 that the accident took place following the competition between two buses for getting more passengers. Police arrested Masum Billa from Barguna district on July 31. DMP Joint Commissioner (Traffic-South) Mofijuddin said stern action will be taken against all unfit and banned vehicles. Asked about the plying of illegal buses on city streets, he said they are continuously dealing with the situation.
