Long Live Abdul Hamid

||Azizul Islam Bhuyian ||

For successive second term Mohammad Abdul Hamid has been elected president of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh. Because of his hard responsibility to the country and the nation and his deep sense of patriotism this covetous award for him was   inevitable and unquestionable. The names of a number of distinguish personalities of the country were in the air centering the presidential polls this time. But the name of Abdul Hamid was in the main centre of discussion at all level. By nominating Abdul Hamid to the office of the presidency of the country for the second time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also President of Bangladesh Awami League, has proved her political prudence, maturity and farsightedness. By selecting Abdul Hamid, in fact, Sheikh Hasina generated inspiration and hope among the dedicated, sincere and idealistic leaders and workers of her party.

In this universe, there is one thing called “fate accomplice”. Destiny has always been a companion to Abdul Hamid. Of course , there is also his political integrity a dedication to the principles he has always upheld which has brought him to the pinnacle of achievement he enjoys at present . His good fortune is that destiny has taken him places. First elected a parliamentarian in 1970, he has been witness to the history of the country. Over the years, he has advanced in his life and his carrier.  He served as Deputy Speaker of the Jatiyo Sangsad and was catapulted to the office of the Speaker on the death of his predecessor bureaucrat-turned –politician Humayun Rashid Chowdhury. That was fortune at work. Fortune worked at Abdul Hamid again, when he was elected to succeed President Zillur Rahman who was on a number of occasions steered the party on various critical junctures.  Today it is once more his good fortune to be nominated for a second term as President of Bangladesh. And to all these can be  added the faith and trust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has always reposed in him.

A seven-time member of the parliament, Abdul Hamid in his whole life conceded defeat only in one general election held in 1978 under autocratic regime. That election is considered as most rigged and farcical polls in nation’s history.  An active students’ movement activist, Abdul Hamid was the elected Vice-President (VP) of Kishoregong Guru Douyal College during ’69 historic mass movement that saw the ouster of Ayub regime. Sheikh Hasina’s best choice Abdul Hamid has many things to do yet. If Allah, the Almighty smiles upon him , Abdul Hamid during his new tenure would have to work as the guardian of the nation on many occasions including Golden Jubilee celebration of nation’s independence and birth centenary of country’s founding Father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.  We believe that Abdul Hamid has to go a long way further and it is expected that the whole journey may not be always full of roses rather it may be   full of thrones, brutal and wild beasts.  But we believe that it is Abdul Hamid, who could very successful steer the nation to its desired destiny under any wild waves or acrimonious environment. We salute our ever-lucky  President  and wish him ever success.
