BNP looking for an agreement on EC presidential meeting

Lastnewsbd, 18th December, Dhaka: After the BNP’s talks with the head of the state, secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said the party hopes the president, as the guardian of the state, will continue his talks to end the “political crisis facing the country.” “The BNP chairperson placed specific proposals for forming the search body, reconstitution of the election commission and reforming electoral laws and the president said he will scrutinize them,” he told a media briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan central office after coming out of Bangabhaban.

Fakhrul said the president has termed constructive the BNP chairperson’s EC proposal and thanked the BNP for placing the proposals. President Abdul Hamid said he thinks the proposals will help institutionalize the country’s democracy, said the BNP leader. “At the same time, President Abdul Hamid thinks that in a democratic state, there is no alternative to talks and dialogue to end the crisis,” claimed Fakhrul. The BNP secretary general said the party proposals include three parts – firstly, how to form the search committee; secondly, the reconstitution of the EC based on consensus and finally amendment of electoral laws. “The search body should be neutral and accepted by all. We have proposed that the five-strong search body should be headed by a former chief justice who is not controversial,” he said. “As our talk with the president is the first one of series of talks, he said he will look into the proposals regarding the system of forming the search once his talks with others end,” said Fakhrul. “The honourable president thinks that a credible and strong election commission which will be able to all is much crucial for the nation” Fakhrul said they held talks on the system of forming the search body. “Khaleda Zia has placed specific suggestions on the issue.”

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday said the president would look into the party’s “specific proposals” before working out a mechanism to form the search committee to reconstitute the election commission. An 11-member BNP delegation, led by its chairperson Khaleda Zia, held talks with president Abdul Hamid over the reconstitution of the election commission (EC). “We have placed a summarized version of the chairperson’s EC proposals before the president. The primary objective of this talk is to reconstitute the election commission with the consensus of all political parties,” said Mirza Fakhrul. “As there is no specific law for reconstituting the EC, there is no alternative to reconstitute the EC with such a consensus. And it is the president who should take the initiative to reach the consensus in this regard,” said Fakhrul.

The BNP leader said his party hoped that the president will again hold talks with the political parties after completing his first round talks with political parties and before finalizing the system of forming the search body. “As the honorable president is a seasoned and all-respected politician, we are optimistic that his initiative to help end the country’s ongoing political crisis will succeed,” said the BNP secretary general. He said his party hoped the president, as the guardian of the state, will play “the due role to end the country’s political crisis.” The BNP secretary general did not reply to a question whether the party put forth any names for forming the search body. In response to another questioner, the BNP secretary general said the BNP delegation also raised the issue of election-time government before the president, but he declined to give the details about it.
