Bangladesh through despite HK upset

Sports Correspondent:
Underdogs Hong Kong pulled off a massive upset when they stunned Bangladesh into a two-wicket defeat in the last Group A qualifier of the World T20 on Thursday.

Bangladesh did qualify for the Super 10 stage, but did so in embarrassing circumstances in Chittagong.

Haseeb Amjad (12) hammered the fourth ball of the 20th over for a six to bring up the winning runs at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Their tame loss to the ICC associate members suggests they might make no impression on the tournament proper when it begins in earnest on Friday night.

It was the net run rate of the Tigers that remained superior to Nepal’s after two big wins earlier in the tournament.

Sent in to bowl first, hosts Bangladesh batted with reckless abandon and paid the price as they were skittled out for 108 in just 16.3 overs.

The stunning batting collapse provided Nepal with an outside chance to go through. But Hong Kong failed to reach the target of 109 in 13.2 overs.

The Tigers will now play reigning champions West Indies, former champions Pakistan and India and Australia.

But skipper Mushfiqur Rahim will be certainly worried since losing to an associate nation is not the best way to prepare for tougher contests.

It was the fourth time an associate nation defeated a Test-playing nation in T20 cricket.

Victory for Hong Kong looked a possibility — even a likelihood — at 44-1 in the eighth over, but a collapse followed to set up a nervy, but thrilling, finale.

Irfan Ahmed (34) started off briskly but Shakib Al Hasan proved unplayable, and he along with the other spinners put Bangladesh right on top.

Munir Dar, who top-scored with a fine 36, had different ideas as he kept the taking cheeky ones and twos and hitting the occasional boundaries.

They again lost their way towards the end, but Amjad kept his cool in the final over.

Mahmudullah trapped Dar leg before. Sabbir then went through the defence of Tanwir Afzal.

Mahmudullah also took out Niazat Khan (12), who holed out to Mominul Haque, the substitute fielder.

The smallest of the minnows at the World T20 who are making their debut in the global event had suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Afghanistan and Nepal.

Mahmudullah then sent the crowd into delirium when he struck with first ball to bowled Mark Chapman (5).

Shakib had struck twice in his fourth and last over. Skipper Jamie Atkinson (7) and Irfan, who was dropped on 12, were both trapped in the front.

Shakib ended with stunning figures of 3-9.

Earlier in the evening, Bangladesh kept losing wickets thick and fast as their batsmen pressed the self destruct button once again inexplicably.

The Tigers fell from 85 for 3 in the space of just four overs, losing their last 7 wickets for just 23 runs to keep millions of their fans on the edge.

Anamul, Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim all threw their wickets away to leave Bangladesh in trouble.

Bangladesh were rocked back early, losing two wickets in the first over bowled by Tanwir Afzal.

He gave Hong Kong the dream start when birthday boy Tamim Iqbal (0) completely missed his line to lose his off-stump. A couple of deliveries later, he trapped Sabbir Rahman (2) leg before.

Anamul Haque and Shakib rebuilt quickly, their 48-run stand coming in just five overs, but when Shakib departed just after the halfway point at 85-3, what followed was brainless cricket from the rest of the batting order.

Al-Amin Hossain (1), Farhad Reza (0), Abdur Razzak (0), Mahmudullah (2) came and went back in a hurry.

Skipper Mushfiqur (23), dropped on 22, slogged at a wide delivery and holed out to extra cover.

Shakib’s (34 off 27) cameo was nipped in the bud when he was caught at deep midwicket off Irfan.

In-form Anamul (26 off 17) was bowled after smashing three consecutive boundaries in the Nadeem Ahmed over.

Nadeem, adjudged Man of the Match, picked 4 for 21 while Nizakat Khan bagged 3 for 17.
