AL urges EC not to bow down to any force

Lastnewsbd, 8th December, Dhaka: An AL delegation led by Nanak accompanied by its two organising secretaries BM Mojammel Huq, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar went to EC on the day. The AL delegation went to EC as the EC announced the date for holding hearing over the appeal of Khaleda Zia’s candidature in the 11th parliamentary polls to be held on December 30. Referring to the Khaleda Zia’s hearing, Nanak said, “EC can do nothing going beyond the Constitution.” Nanak also alleged countrymen are worried as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiya Oikya Front and Jamaat-e-Islami are trying to foil the 11th general election by creating unusual issue. The ruling Awami League has urged the Election Commission (EC) not to bow down to pressure from any quarter. “We urged the Election Commission not to bow down to any quarter under any pressure,” Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary of Awami League, told journalists  after emerging from a meeting with EC at its Agargaon office in the city on Saturday. He also urged the EC to remain alert ahead of the upcoming national election. Responding to a query, he dismissed the allegation that the government is pressuring the EC. “It (the govt) is fully cooperating with the Commission for holding a free, fair and credible election in the country,” he said. Asked whether the Awami League has provided the list of candidates under the Grand Alliance, he said they will submit it to the Commission on Sunday. He, however, declined to provide details over the candidatures of the ruling party-led coalition.
