Barisal schools give free text book in exchange of cash



Lastnewsbd, 3rd January, Dhaka: Different schools including Rajihar Secondary School and Bakal Niranjan Boiragi Secondary School of Agailjhara collected Tk400 to Tk500 from each student under several excuses without any receipt in return during the book festival. Many students of primary as well as secondary schools of Barisal district’s Agailjhara and Gaurnadi upazilas made the allegation against their teachers. Teachers in several schools in Barisal have allegedly been distributing new free textbooks in exchange for money. This incident caused massive outrage among students and parents. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board started distributing free new textbooks through a book festival on January 1.

The students who did not bring money were given half of the textbooks and were told that the rest of the books would be given after the payment, students and parents alleged. Besides, the schools were collecting old books from the students in the name of the education office. Agailjhara Secondary Teachers’ Association President Sunil Kumar Baroi said: “It is not justified to collect money from the students during the book festival.” Agailjhara upazila Secondary Education Officer Nazrul Islam said: “Teachers should not collect money on book festival day. Necessary action will be taken if any school collects money for distributing textbooks.” On collecting old books, he said he had not received any such instruction. “Collecting old books using my office’s name is also not right,” Nazrul added. Rajihar Secondary School’s Headmaster Ujjal Kumar Mandal denied the allegation, saying: “We did not take any money from students for books. We were rather collecting admission fees and Puja and sports fees.” Also, there are allegations against of collecting Tk80 from each student as sports fee Gerakul Government Primary School’s acting headmaster Ishtiaq Ahmed and several members of the school’s managing committee. New books were distributed after collecting the amount.
