Tongi factory fire death toll rises to 35

Another man who suffered serious burn injuries at Tampaco Foils factory fire in Tongi BSCIC Industrial area died at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday evening, raising the death toll in the deadly fire incident to 35.

The deceased, Hossain Ahmed Russel, in his twenties, a resident of the village of Ghagua under Golapganj police station in Sylhet

He died undergoing treatment at Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.

Confirming the death toll, the Gazipur district Relief and rehabilitation official Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman 11 people are still remain missing.

Russel was admitted to the hospital with 70 per cent burn injuries, said Mahbubur Rahman.

Russel’s family received Tk20, 000 from district administration for funeral.

Twenty-four people were killed 50 others injured after the fire broke out at ‘Tampaco Foils Ltd’ in Tongi BSCIC Industrial Area in the early hours of 10 September.

Addressing the press briefing, the ISPR director said there was a stock of 25 tonnes of chemicals at the factory when the fire broke out.

A murder case was filed against eight people, including factory owner Syed Md Mokbul Hossain, with Tongi Police Station on Sunday night, said Firoz Talukder, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Abdul Quader Patwary, father of deceased worker Mohammad Hossain Jewel, filed the case, he said.

However, factory owner Mokbul, also a former lawmaker, went into hiding after the incident.

Gas leakage caused the fire at the flexible and tobacco packaging factory.

The blast of Tampaco Foils Ltd sparked off huge fire at about 6:00pm on Saturday and led to the collapse of the four-storey factory.

Around 150 workers were in the factory building when the boiler went off but factory owner Syed Md Mokbul Hossain, also an ex-lawmaker of Sylhet-6 constituency, told reporters that 75 workers were working in his factory on 9 September night.

The government announced Tk2 lakh for each families of the killed workers and maximum Tk1 lakh each for the injured as grants from the Labour Welfare Fund.

The injured workers would get Tk10, 000 each from the district administration while the families of the deceased would be given Tk20,000 each for funeral.
