30,000 people marooned in Bhola
At least 30,000 people of Monpura are left marooned in their homes as due to heavy rains and tidal surge triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The onrush of water swept through seven villages, submerging homes.
Locals said their villages had been flooded by river wave on Monday as tidal water rushed through the village. Already North Sakuchia and South Sakuchia union of the upazila detached due to high tide.
The waves damaged village crops and large trees while at least 300 houses now risk being washed away.
The locals also said that if the authority does not take necessary steps to repair the river embankment soon.
Executive Engineer Babul Aktar of Bangladesh Water Development Board said that quick steps will be taken to repair the damaged embankment.
Following the matter, Upazila Chairman Selina Akhtar Chowdhury said, “Request has been sent to Water Development Board to repair the damage soon otherwise, the coastal people will suffer most during Eid-ul-Fitr.”
